The iPhone 17 Pro delivers a significantly enhanced camera experience compared to earlier models, including the iPhone 16 Pro. With upgrades like the new Center Stage front camera, three 48MP Fusion cameras on the back, and software additions such as Dual Capture, Apple has clearly pushed the camera system forward. However, one unexpected change has caught users’ attention: Night mode is no longer available when shooting in Portrait mode.

For years, Portrait mode has been a favorite among iPhone users, especially because it previously supported Night mode for capturing clearer, more detailed images in low-light environments. According to an Apple support document, the feature still works on all Pro models from the iPhone 12 Pro through the iPhone 16 Pro—but not on the new iPhone 17 Pro. This makes the omission especially surprising, given that every Pro iPhone released since 2020 has offered Night mode for Portrait shots.

The removal has raised questions about Apple’s decision-making, especially since camera capabilities are a major selling point for the Pro lineup. It’s possible that the change is temporary and could be reversed with a future software update if enough users voice concerns. Until then, anyone who relies heavily on low-light Portrait photography should be aware that upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro may actually result in a downgrade for this specific feature.
