Samsung ramps up work on a mysterious Galaxy Z Fold phone
Samsung’s upcoming foldable device with the model number SM-F971B has taken another step toward launch, appearing in the GSMA database. While earlier leaks suggested it could be the Galaxy Z Flip 8 FE, new information strongly indicates that it belongs to the Galaxy Z Fold lineup instead. This conclusion is based on Samsung’s consistent model numbering: Flip devices use SM-F7xx numbers, while Fold devices use SM-F9xx numbers. Since SM-F971 follows the Fold pattern, it is now more likely to be a Galaxy Z Fold-series phone rather than a Flip model.

However, the SM-F971 is not the Galaxy Z Fold 8 either. If Samsung follows its usual naming system, the Fold 8 should carry the model number SM-F976, which leaves SM-F971 in an interesting position. To understand what this device could be, it may help to look at the numbering used for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and its FE variant. This suggests that Samsung could be preparing a more affordable “FE” version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8—potentially the Galaxy Z Fold 8 FE—bringing premium foldable technology to a wider audience.
