Apple’s new iPhone 17 is already entering rarified Air
It’s almost a week now of the iPhone 17 launch, which makes it a good moment to take stock of how things are shaping up. According to The Information (subscription required), Apple has asked two suppliers to ramp up production of the low-end iPhone 17 by about a third to keep up with higher-than-expected demand. A fall production increase is unusual, but it suggests Apple’s more affordable model is striking a chord with buyers. Of course, when that demand eventually levels out, those same suppliers could face steep cutbacks—but for now, the momentum is clearly in Apple’s favor.

The popularity of the low-end iPhone 17 is easy to understand. Apple added features like an always-on display, ProMotion, and Center Stage to the more affordable model, while also increasing storage capacity without raising the price. Unlike with the iPhone 17 Pro, where Apple quietly removed the cheapest configuration, this approach feels straightforward and consumer-friendly. For many buyers, the upgrade path offers real value—some even find they’re paying less per month than they were before. It might not be enough to buy lunch for the whole office, but for individual upgraders, it’s a win.
