Samsung could replace a key Galaxy S27 component to cut costs

Although the Galaxy S27 series is still months away from launch, rumors about Samsung's next flagship lineup are already gaining momentum. Recent reports suggest the series could include four models—the Galaxy S27, S27 Plus, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. A new leak also claims Samsung may replace one of its key display components in the standard and Plus models. Specifically, the company is reportedly considering using third-party Display Driver ICs (DDIs) instead of the in-house chips supplied by its System LSI division. DDIs are responsible for translating data from the phone's processor into the visuals displayed on the screen, controlling factors such as color accuracy, brightness, and overall display performance. The Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are expected to continue using Samsung's own DDIs.

The reported move appears to be part of Samsung's broader effort to reduce manufacturing costs. Rising prices of memory components such as DRAM, HBM, and NAND—driven by strong demand fueled by the AI boom and limited supply—have increased production costs across the smartphone industry. To protect its profit margins, Samsung is said to be exploring alternative suppliers for certain components. According to the report, the company is evaluating DDIs from South Korean firms Anapass, DB Global Chip, and Wonik D2I, along with Taiwan-based Novatek. Before making a final decision, Samsung is expected to compare the quality and performance of these third-party solutions against its own in-house DDIs.

The report also notes that Samsung has not made a final decision yet, and the company is still in the evaluation phase. If third-party DDIs can deliver comparable performance, reliability, and power efficiency, Samsung could move forward with the switch for the Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus while keeping its premium models unchanged. Such a strategy would allow the company to lower production costs without significantly affecting the user experience, although any changes are unlikely to be confirmed until the Galaxy S27 lineup moves closer to its official launch.
