New proof for the iPhone 18 Pro having a variable aperture camera surfaces
A fresh leak tied to Apple's supply chain has revealed one of the most anticipated upgrades coming to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max—a variable aperture main camera.
The information surfaced after Tata Electronics, Apple's manufacturing partner in India, was hit by a ransomware attack last month. As hackers leaked a large cache of internal files, researchers uncovered a diagnostics log that appears to confirm Apple's next-gen camera plans.
According to the leaked documents, both Pro models will feature Sony's IMX905 sensor paired with a variable aperture system. While the sensor retains the same 1.22μm pixel size as its predecessor, the addition of variable aperture could significantly improve photography by allowing the camera to automatically adjust the amount of light entering the lens. This means sharper daylight shots, better low-light performance, and enhanced depth-of-field control.
The leak also suggests that the telephoto camera, ultrawide sensor, LiDAR scanner, and front-facing camera will remain largely unchanged from the previous generation.
There's another piece of news that may disappoint buyers. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro lineup could become up to $200 more expensive, with rising memory chip prices and increasing component costs being the primary reasons behind the expected price hike.
Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone Ultra during its traditional September launch event.
If this leak proves accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro's variable aperture could be Apple's biggest camera innovation in years.
