Apple quietly ends one of its most overlooked apps – eight years later
After eight years, Apple has officially discontinued its lesser-known Clips app, marking the quiet end of an experiment that never truly captured mainstream attention. Introduced in 2017, Apple Clips was a compact video editing app for iPhone designed to help users create fun, shareable clips for social media. Despite its innovative features, it never achieved significant popularity. The company has now confirmed on its support page that Clips will no longer receive updates, and new users won’t be able to download it from the App Store. However, existing users can still access and redownload the app through their Apple accounts — signaling a gentle phase-out rather than an abrupt removal.
When it first launched, Clips showed real promise, allowing users to create short videos by combining up to 300 segments for a total of 60 minutes. It initially saw strong download numbers — between 500,000 and one million in just four days — but never managed to break into the App Store’s top 20. Over time, competition from more advanced apps like CapCut and Meta’s video editing tools, along with the built-in editing features on popular social media platforms, overshadowed Apple’s offering. In the fast-moving world of mobile apps, not every idea thrives. Clips was creative and useful, but in the end, it became another example of how even Apple’s innovations can quietly fade away when the audience moves on.
