Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo to Challenge Windows PCs

Apple Inc. has introduced the MacBook Neo, a $599 laptop designed to expand the company’s presence in the budget computer market and compete directly with affordable Windows PCs and ChromeOS-powered Chromebooks. This release marks Apple’s most aggressive push into lower-priced laptops, with the device costing about $400 less than the entry-level MacBook Air, which now starts at $1,099. The MacBook Neo features a compact 13-inch display, making it one of Apple’s smallest laptops, and it will be available in vibrant colors such as citrus, silver, indigo, and blush—an approach clearly aimed at students and everyday consumers. One of the most notable aspects of the device is its processor: the laptop runs on Apple’s A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro, marking the first time Apple has powered a Mac with an iPhone-class chip instead of its traditional M-series processors. This shift reflects how powerful Apple’s smartphone chips have become, allowing the company to significantly reduce pricing while still delivering performance suitable for daily computing tasks.

Despite its lower price, the MacBook Neo still carries several premium elements that Apple laptops are known for. It features an aluminum design, a full keyboard and trackpad, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, Bluetooth 6 support, and a 1080p FaceTime camera. The laptop includes 8GB of RAM, a 6-core CPU, and a 5-core GPU, with storage starting at 256GB and an upgraded $699 model offering 512GB and Touch ID for secure login and payments. Battery life is rated at around 16 hours, slightly below the 18 hours offered by newer MacBook Air models but still competitive in the laptop market. Apple has also introduced education discounts that bring the starting price down to $499, making it even more attractive for students and institutions. The device is powerful enough for everyday tasks like web browsing, document editing, video calls, and light photo editing while still running the full macOS operating system and supporting both Mac and iPhone apps. With preorders already underway and deliveries beginning March 11, Apple hopes the MacBook Neo will attract new customers to its ecosystem and potentially boost sales of related products such as iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices.
